Wednesday Night Blues with the 12 Bar All-Stars

My husband Cass and I have a long history of enjoying live music together, especially the blues. Before we had kids and responsibilities we were regulars at the Beale Street Blues Fest in Memphis and of course the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.  We’ve seen The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Buddy Guy at Red Rocks, Dr. John, Ray Charles (god rest his soul) and attended all sorts of little blues festivals up and down the Eastern seaboard, yeah, you could say we got around.

Asheville’s got plenty of blue skies, blue ridges, and even bluegrass but not a lot of blues. Happily, through a few strange twists of fate, Cass recently found himself with a chance to create a blues night at the Asheville Music Hall every Wednesday in May, so he’s running with it!! Come out to the Asheville Music Hall for the 12 Bar All-Stars, featuring Aaron “Woody” Wood, J.C. Lang, Marcel Anton, Chris Kew and Zach Alberto!! These guys had a lot of fun last week (check out their face book page for pics) and are fixing for more tonight! $5 cover after 9 so get there early!

Blues 12 Bar All Stars

Upright Bassman

Sweet goodness and mercy, somebody thank his Mama for this delicious, upright bass playin’, man with the devastatingly handsome Big Nasty Jazz Band.

What plays like a banjo but sounds like a guitar? A banjitar.

Lucky me! I got to do two things I love this week at the same time, photograph something new to me while being serenaded by a serious musician. I was asked to do a few portraits of this beautiful instrument as part of an album cover project for a client,  a custom made 5 string Banjitar; a guitar body, a 5 string banjo neck and a unique tone. It’s a transition instrument for banjo players that are interested in the rounder and more mellow tone that the guitar body offers in resonance making it ideal for folk and celtic music as well as bluegrass. I’ll pass along a link for listening once the CD is out in a few months.

The Crux

That’s a wrap!!! Just uploaded the final cover proofs this week for Cathy Ponton King‘s brand new album, “The Crux”, featuring Jimmy Thackery, Ronnie Earl and Butch Warren!  So pleased to be working with my sweet friend on her latest project!  Look for it to be out by March or April!!

4.1.11: Harvest Records

The new and improved Harvest Records just reopened with twice the space at the beginning of March.  I just got a chance to hang out for a while there this morning when I popped in to pick up the new Agent 23 disc Monkey Wrench. (Highly recommended, but I want to feature that on it’s own day after I’ve grokked it a little more.)

Harvest Records has had a long rep. in West Asheville as THE spot to hang out and catch up on unique grooves but with the new and improved space there’s room for so much more.  There’s amazing art on the walls, a large and varied Locals section right next to the front door and a homey atmosphere that really let’s your brain stretch out and wonder what’s coming on the stereo next.  There’s also a stage riser now for in house shows. I had a big smile when I left and can’t wait to go back for another explore.
