Spider Palace

Spider Palace

Hello October! Asheville never fails to blow me away with how “right on time” it is with the seasons. Leaves are beginning to turn and this week we’ll begin to really see the change of seasons. Case in point, I opened the front door this morning to discover this enterprising funnel spider’s web work in the grass. All the surrounding webs are flat but this one obviously has higher aspirations.

Golden Orb Spider

Admittedly I was never much on spiders before I moved to NC. But there are so many bold and interesting spiders here they are pretty hard to resist.  Case in point Gold Orb Spinner with a June Bug Surprise casserole.

Big Bad Wolf Spider!

Another large spider encounter, this time in the woods.  This wolf spider was nearly invisible crouched on this tree when I noticed him. So cool!  At 100% magnification on this shot you can see these hair spikes he has sprouting all over his body.

Webs and Roses

A foggy morning for the spiders and roses.

The Daring Jumping Spider

That’s really what they’re called and that’s really what they do!  We found this one in the wood pile yesterday while we were getting ready for the snow that’s coming this weekend.  I put him in a box so the kids and I could study him up close.  Good thing too, right after I took this shot he gave me a demonstration of why they got that name, it jumped off the table and right at me!  After a good deal of jumping around by yours truly we found him on my jeans, got him safely onto a twig and let him go behind the old church next door.  Not poisonous, but definitely surprising!
